Fall Shop Tour & New Antique Find

Yesterday I spent the day at the shop decorating for autumn and playing with all of our new things from the Fall Collection (here). I like to change things around often – to keep it fresh for our customers, and keep me from getting bored ; )

I recently sold the Welsh dresser in the shop that housed our seasonal scented candles (here). It was a newer reproduction piece and while I appreciate the functionality of repro pieces for real use in a home (nice new drawers that work…) I love the look of rustic pieces with character. I think especially in retail settings when all of the products are new, it is helpful to add soul and character in the fixtures (hello, Anthropologie, Ralph Lauren…).

I had my eye on an antique in town since opening two years ago. I decided to pull the trigger, sell the stand-in and buy the real deal. I sold the reproduction piece to a friend. She picked it up and then I called the antiques dealer. The piece I had coveted for so long was now twice as much as I remembered (apparently…). Humph.

I decided to sit on it for a week and see what shook out. Not a typical response for me. My friend (and one of our shop girls) took a trip out to Woodson Antiques (in Raymore, for locals) and spotted another gorgeous Welsh dresser. This one had a beautiful scalloped trim and enclosed cupboards below – ten times more beautiful than the one I had been coveting. And half the price. I adore it. Proof that these sort of things do work out.

Come visit us at the shop in Westwood Hills (Kansas City) for our Fall Open House!
