Garage Organization Project

Our garage had become a place of piles and forgotten things. I took a couple of days this spring to reclaim it and make it a place we were excited to pull into every day. My biggest original mistake was to have shelving. Shelves are easy places to shove and pile. Everything that we use/wanted on the shelves were hiding behind and under things we had just stuck there when we didn’t have another spot. We couldn’t find what we needed and everything was cluttered.

I decided to get rid of the shelving and use shaker peg rails to give everything a place. I painted the pegs, rails and walls to give it a build-in paneled look and to just freshen up the whole place.

Paint color : Farrow & Ball Vert De Terre

Pots : Garden Pots & Tools

I’ve been itching for a potting shed, so I thought this would be a good opportunity to give my pretty garden supplies a proper place.

My favorite garden pots and tools >

Bing waiting for his leash to be put on. We keep the dog bags in one of the baskets. The wooden crates are fastened to the wall with screws and painted to tie them in. They are filled with balls, sidewalk chalk, etc.

I’ve just restocked our Hanging Baskets, too. I’ll keep it hanging here when it isn’t on our front door.

Here is the garage wall with everything put back into place, but before I did the pretty potting shed styling. I love that it is pretty and functional and it really doesn’t allow for things to get cluttered up. Not a great photo, but you get the idea. I’ve included more photos of each stage at the end of the post.

I took all of the tools out of our tool bag and put them on individual pegs. I can’t tell you how much I love not digging through that very heavy bag full of things anytime I need a screwdriver.

I try to incorporate peg rails in any project I can because I can make them all by myself, they are inexpensive, so useful and pretty. Here is the step-by-step of how I made these.

Use 1×4″ pine boards on the walls and screw them in making sure at least 2 screws are in a stud on each board.

Use a 1/2″ drill bit to make a hole for each peg.

Fill the hole with wood glue and insert the wooden peg.

  • 1×4″ pine boards
  • 1/2″ drill bit / electric drill
  • wooden shaker pegs
  • wood glue
  • Other :
